Default anyone else find this strange?

So i have a little story to share, something that happened to me tonight. I'm pretty new to GW, a month or two in, and I'm currently working on getting my first elite necro armor. up until tonight i have saved up about 20-25k for this purpose, through farming and various things of that nature, working on it when i was bored over the past few days. I was in Ascalon city selling some gold weapons when this new lv5 player started asking me basic noob questions, and it was pretty obvious he had just started playing and had very little map and had made very little progress. I almost sold him a gold weapon, but he backed out. I went back to my buisiness, and he pmd me a little while later asking me if I could run him to draks because he wanted some new armor.

the character I was playing with is by no means a running character. I told him he would never find a run to draks in ascalon city and was much more likely to find one in beacons perch, a location he did not have. i was bored so i told him i could bring him to beacons, but not run him. he offered me 5k to do it, and of course I jumped on it. silly kid. during the course of escorting him there, he kept raising the amount he was going to pay me. first to 10k, then to 15k. I started getting a little suspicious as to why he was trying to pay me more money so i asked him to show me the gold to make sure i wasnt getting bs'd. he had it. by the time we got to beacons, he said he would pay me 25k at beacons and another 25k to get him all the way to draks. i'm pretty weak and told him i couldnt get him to draks on just me and 3 heroes, so he paid me 25k and went on his way. now,

1. he could have gottten an actual run to beacons for an amazingly less amount of money than that, instead of paying me 25k to literally walk him there.

2. how does a brand new lv5 player who doesnt even have any locations outside of ascalon have 50k lying around to throw me to bring him places?

being pretty new myself i was just wondering if anyone else found this as weird as i did. i mean it all works out for me, but huh?

He was probably rich and messing with you, I mean 25k is pocket change to some people and I've run into like top5 just won goldcape people pretending to be noobs in ascalon.
Also I tithe my income, and end up like randomly giving away 10 ectos to the first person i see.

i do that to people all the time. i find legit players who are actually nice, and i give them a decent reward without them knowing. its a good feeling to pay 25k to someone who was nice rather than 5k to a 12 year old brat.

It looks like you put a dent into getting your elite armor buddy, gj. You were right to be suspicious, leechers use this tactic to get you excited over getting a blown up fee and then they scoot off, ignore you, change district and leave you fuming until you blow your top off in alliance chat .

Mostly likely a new player using a friend's account.

Here's the most likely explanation:

He saw GW at a mate's place, decided to get it himself too, asked his mate if they could play together, his mate said sure, but you'll have to get someone to run you to Drok's first, here's some gold, call me when you get there.

I think he meant it the same way, just the word "dent" wasn't a good choice.

Congratulations to the OP for being +25k richer for doing very little.

Reminds me of the time long, long ago when I was playing through on my Mesmer and a guy was asking for help with the quests in Yak's Bend. I decided to help him with the one where you have to head into the mine area (forget name of quest) and after we finished, he opened up trade and gave me 10k as a reward and thank you for helping him.

Of course 10k is nothing these days but back then, it was one of those O_o moments...getting a monetary reward for just being nice.

And off topic again:

no way would I accept that amount of money from another player for doing something "nice" or "simple". Regardless of how poor I was.

Some players are just nice or they really don't care about virtual money, goods or status. When I was going through Prophecies with my second character and began actively posting in GW forums and threads (not GURU), I made a topic asking the then rich players how and why did they have so much money.

Back then I didn't know farming existed or that Globs of Ectoplasm and Obsidian Shards were like 20k and 10k each respectively (the good ol days). I managed to save up 100k after awhile just by regulating spending and playing through the game. So it befuddled me to meet people with 700k, 850k in their storages walking around with multiple 15k armor sets.

In my "whining" thread, I basically called out the rich to share their wealth with the poorer folks like myself. I ended up meeting a guy who took pity on my poor status and who eventually gave me enough plat, materials and dye to craft my first 15k armor set (15k Aeromancer). Why did he do it? He was rich through buying 100k 1000k through sites as I later found out after joining his guild (of course this was before the crackdown and disappearance of all those auctions on Ebay etc).

I was tempted to follow suit, but then I discovered farming (I miss thee Ettins) and after scoring several Superior Absorptions (which I sold for 100k to trader and people), I got my own wealth my way. And it felt good

Ah......the past.........*sigh*

For your second question, any brand new player that gets to a town with a xunlai chest can use the money and items stored in there. He surely had other more experienced characters that can make lots of money. Some guys have not one character but 8, 20, or more spread on more than one accounts.
And fat running "tips" in Guild Wars are common business on certain routes
